The International Atlantic Economic Society extends a warm congratulations to the winners of the 2026 Atlantic Economic Journal (AEJ) Best Article Award, Dr. Kaleb G. Abreha & Dr. Raymond Robertson, for their paper “Revisiting the Effects of Regional Trade Agreements Using Staggered Adoption Design“. The article can be found in the September 2025 issue of the Atlantic Economic Journal.
About the authors
Dr. Kaleb Abreha is an applied economist specializing in international trade and economic development. His academic and policy work focuses on international trade and investment, global value chains, firm and industry dynamics, and industrialization. His research also examines how regional trade agreements can serve as development policy instruments to promote economic development and address the root causes of migration. His work has been published in well-known peer-reviewed journals and policy outlets. Dr. Abreha was an assistant research scientist at the Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics, and Public Policy at Texas A&M University. He is also a former World Bank Africa Fellow and served as a consultant on multiple projects at the World Bank. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Aarhus University (Denmark).
Dr. Raymond Robertson is Professor and holder of the Helen and Roy Ryu Chair in Economics and Government in the Department of International Affairs at the Bush School of Government and Public Service and the Director of the Mosbacher Institute for Trade, Economics, and Public Policy. He is a research fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor in Bonn, Germany, and a senior research fellow at the Mission Foods Texas-Mexico Center. He was named a 2018 Presidential Impact Fellow by Texas A&M University.
Dr. Robertson earned a BA in political science and economics from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, and an MS and PhD in economics from the University of Texas at Austin. He has taught at the Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs at Syracuse University and was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Economics at the Graduate School of Administration, Monterrey Institute of Technology’s Mexico City campus.
Widely published in the field of labor economics and international economics, Dr. Robertson previously chaired the US Department of Labor’s National Advisory Committee for Labor Provisions of the U.S. Free Trade Agreements and served on both the State Department’s Advisory Committee on International Economic Policy and the Center for Global Development’s advisory board.
About the Award
Each year, the International Atlantic Economic Society is pleased to honor outstanding work published in the Atlantic Economic Journal with the AEJ Best Article Award.
Winners of the AEJ Best Article Award are determined by vote. Manuscripts published in the Atlantic Economic Journal are evaluated and rated on clarity and content by the Board of Editors and voted on by a panel of judges.
Winners are recognized for their scholarship and receive a waiver of conference registration fees for the next national conference or international conference. AEJ Best Article Award winners are also formally announced at the Presidential Address during our annual national conference and are invited to say a few words about their work.
An announcement featuring the winner(s)of the Best Article Award also appears in each March issue of the Atlantic Economic Journal, along with a brief summary of the work’s important findings. Past winners of the AEJ Best Article Award are featured on our website.
