Manuscript Style Instructions

All manuscripts submitted for consideration in IAER are sent through a blind peer review process. Use the following guidelines when submitting your paper for review.

FORMAT

Limit the paper to no more than 25 double-spaced, typewritten pages, including references and footnotes. Use white, 8 x 11 or 8 x 14 inch paper. Leave a 1-inch margin on all sides.

Cover Page

1. Limit the title of the manuscript to no more than 10 words.

2. The title should include the name of the author and co-authors and their affiliations. The cover page is the only page of the manuscript in which the authors and co-authors names and affiliations should be listed.

3. List the JEL category and name under which the paper primarily belongs.

4. State any disclaimers to the paper.

5. The cover page should indicate the name, address, and phone and fax numbers of the correspondence person.

Manuscript Pages

1. A 125-word abstract should appear at the top of the first manuscript page and before the start of the body of the manuscript. Place the JEL category number under which the paper primarily belongs at the end of the abstract.

2. Double space between all paragraphs, headings, and subheadings.

3. Grammar: The paper should be written in the third person. When referring to your article, do not use words such as "I," "we," "us," or "our." Instead, use terms such as "the authors" or "the paper."

4. Frequent use of headings and subheadings is encouraged to help improve readability. It is also recommended that all paragraphs be limited in length to no more than one-third of a page.

5. Abbreviations: For special abbreviations, spell out the words the first time they are used, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses. Thereafter, the abbreviation alone should be used. For example: "Data from the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) indicate..."

FOOTNOTES

Footnotes should be limited in number and short in length. They are explanatory remarks about a specific point in the text. They should enlarge on a point made in the text or define terms. Footnotes should not be used to reference source material. Number footnotes consecutively throughout the paper, not page by page. Place footnotes on separate pages following the last page of the text.

REFERENCES

1. Be certain to separate references from footnotes. References are works of literature (journals, books, conference proceedings, etc.) cited within the text and should not appear as footnotes.

2. All references cited within the text must also appear on the reference page at the end of the manuscript. All references which appear on the reference page at the end of the manuscript must also appear within the text. Any reference not appearing in both places should be removed.

Format for Reference Page

1. Alphabetize all references by author's last name (with last name first for the primary and secondary authors). Include all coauthors in the reference list. Indent the second and subsequent lines of each reference.

2. For references to journal articles, include the full title of the article and journal, volume number, issue number, month and year of publication, and total page numbers of the article. Example:

Abizadeh, Sohrab; Benarroch, Michael; Yousefi, Mahmood. "A Multilevel Government Model of Deficits and Inflation," Atlantic Economic Journal, 24, 2, June 1996, pp. 118-30.

3. For references to books, provide the name of the author, full book title, city, state, or country of publication, name of publisher, and year of publication, as well as the specific page numbers referenced. If the reference is featured in a publication by another author, list the reference according to the chapter author's name but also include the book title and primary author or editor's name. Example:

Poterba, James B.; Summers, Lawrence H. "Public Policy Implications of Declining Old-Age Mortality," in Gary Burtless, ed., Work, Health, and Income Among the Elderly, Washington, DC: The Brookings Institution, 1987, pp. 19-58.

4. For references to public documents, include the department or agency responsible for the document, title, any further description such as number in a series, city and state (or country) of publication, publisher, and date of publication. Example:

U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. Educational Attainment of Workers, Special Labor Force Report 186, Washington, DC: GPO, 1976.

5. For references to conference papers, include the name of the paper, the name and dates of the conference, and its location. Example:

Levy, Thierry. "The Intersubjectivist Theory of Value and Production," paper presented at the International Atlantic Economic Conference, Vienna, Austria, March 10-16, 1995.

How to Place References Within the Text of the Manuscript

1. When you reference a publication in the body of your manuscript, insert the author's last name and the year of publication in brackets, including specific page numbers. Place it at the end of the sentence or before quoted matter.

2. If reference is made to two or more works by the same author in the same year, designate them as follows: 1986a, 1986b. Example:

This form of analysis has received attention in the literature [Pfouts, 1994b, pp. 20-7].

TABLES AND FIGURES

1. Tables and figures should be placed on separate pages. Graphs are considered to be figures. Limit tables and figures to those that are absolutely necessary for the presentation.

2. The words "TABLE" and "FIGURE" should be in all capital letters and centered.

3. Number all tables and figures in Arabic numerals. The title of the table or figure appears on a separate line and is centered and typed in capital and lower case. Examples:

TABLE 1

Rank Order of OECD Countries

FIGURE 3

Efficiency of Supply and Demand

4. Upon notification of paper acceptance, authors are required to submit professionally drawn originals of all figures and graphs. Dot matrix or photocopies are not acceptable. All figures and graphs must be prepared on heavy white paper or acetate sheeting. Press or Times Roman type style should be used for reproduction on a width of 33 picas. Label all axes and curves where applicable. Axes should be labeled by title rather than by notation. If graphic facilities are not available, IAER can have the work done by an outside company with the author billed at our cost (about $125.00 per graph).

MATHEMATICAL NOTATION

Number equations consecutively throughout the paper, not page by page. Mathematical notation should be eliminated or minimized whenever possible. Notation that is of general knowledge (e.g., Cobb-Douglas production function LaGrangian multiplier, Euler's theorem) should not be included. Only include mathematical techniques or equations that make new contributions to the literature.

Avoid repeated listing of the arguments of functions where these can be omitted without causing confusion. Do not make repeated use of time or sectoral subscripts and superscripts if they can be suppressed without ambiguity.

Use common rather than unusual symbols. Reduce the height of expressions by stating their limits rather than above and below the operator.

DISKETTE SUBMISSION

Submit two hard copies of the manuscript along with a copy of your paper on diskette using WordPerfect or Microsoft Word. Authors who do not have the facilities to provide IAER with diskettes using WordPerfect or Word have two options. First, if there are no equations and mathematical notations, the paper can be submitted in ASCII format using IBM compatible software. Second, an author of a manuscript with equations and mathematical notation has the option of having the full manuscript typeset by IAER. The charge for this service is $150.00

SUBMISSION FEE

IAER will consider manuscripts directly submitted. However, special attention will be given to authors who have presented papers at the AES conferences and have incorporated comments received at the meetings into a final version of their manuscript for submission to the reviewers of IAER. Submission fees are waived for papers resulting from conference presentations if submitted within three months after completion of the conference. Submissions after that date, and all nonconference manuscripts, will be charged a $80.00 submission fee for members and $130.00 for nonmembers.

Mail two copies and the diskette containing your paper using WordPerfect, Microsoft Word, or ASCII to:
