HISTORICAL POTSDAM AND THE SANSSOUCI PALACE
Wednesday, 15 March, 11h30 - 15h30

Join us as we depart from the Kempinski Hotel Bristol on an historical tour to the old garrison and residence town of Potsdam. Just a short distance from Berlin, Potsdam, famous for its splendid Prussion palaces and gardens, is set in an idyllic landscape of woods and lakes. The Sanssouci Palace in Potsdam is the former baroque residence and a favorite refuge of the Prussian King Frederic the Great. Called the “philosopher of Sanssouci,” he entertained philosophers and educators, among them the French philosopher Voltaire. You will have a guided tour of the palace and discover other sights in Potsdam, such as the Dutch Quarter and the Russian colony of Alexandrovka.

WILLY BRANDT EXHIBITION, RECEPTION, AND CITY TOUR

Enjoy an exceptional opportunity to experience the history of Berlin and the warm hospitality of this great city. Karsten Brenner, President, and Wolfram Hoppenstedt, Executive Director, of the Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt Foundation have graciously invited all conference participants to be their guest for this special event.

The afternoon begins with a two hour panoramic city tour of Berlin, sponsored in part by the Institute for Global Economic Affairs at Marquette University. You will drive by the main sites of the city, including the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche ( Memorial Church), Museum Island, Philharmonic Hall, German and French Cathedrals, Check Point Charlie, and the impressive Brandenburg Gate.

We then stop at the historic Rathaus Schöneberg (old city hall) for a private tour of the Rathaus and the Brandt Exhibition. Willy Brandt was Governing Mayor of Berlin, Federal Chancellor of Germany, and the recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. This unique exhibit includes valuable historical photos; some of his early political materials; his exchange of letters with leading political figures, including Konrad Adenauer, John F. Kennedy, Leonid Brezhnev, Indira Gandhi, and Mikhail Gorbachev. You will be able to view his official papers along with numerous personal documents. A reception will immediately follow at the historic Kennedy Hall.

The Presidential Luncheon Address will be presented by Charles A. E. Goodhart of the London School of Economics
and formerly of the Bank of England.

AN EVENING ATOP THE REICHSTAG
Saturday, 18 March, 18h30 - 22h00

This very unique evening has been especially planned for you. Depart the Kempinski Hotel Bristol for the Reichstag, the seat of German Parliament. Enjoy a short guided tour of the architectural marvel, the Norman Foster Glass Dome on top of the Reichstag. After touring the Dome, dinner will be served at the Käfer Dachgarten Restaurant on the roof, right next to the Dome. Enjoy a spectacular view of Berlin while you dine, making this a most special and unique evening for your stay in this historic city.
