1. STONEHENGE AND SALISBURY CATHEDRAL—Wednesday, 9 March,
09h00 - 17h00
Join us as we depart from the Hilton London Paddington on an historical tour
to Stonehenge and Salisbury. Standing alone on Salisbury Plain is one of the
most important prehistoric monuments in the world, visible from miles around.
This is your chance to make up your mind about the mystery that is Stonehenge.
Dating back around 5000 years, these ancient stones have puzzled, intrigued,
and fascinated people through the centuries. You will be able to photograph
this great monument and hear some of the facts and theories about its purpose.
Wonder at the ingenuity and perseverance of ancient man and decide for yourself
whether it was a temple or an astronomical calendar. See the burial mounds of
the pre-historic Bronze Age people and hear about the recent finds which help
us to learn even more about our ancestors.
Salisbury Cathedral is a tremendous thirteenth century
undertaking in Stone and is one of the world's most magnificent buildings. Its
breathtaking 404 foot spire is the tallest in Britain. We also visit one of
the only four remaining copies of the famous Magna Carta, sealed by King John
in 1215 at Runnymede, near Windsor. You will also have time to visit the impressive
museum, which includes artifacts removed from Stonehenge, or shopping time if
you prefer! Lunch is not included.
